For Germany at the Eurovision

Jazzchor Freiburg
Director: Bertrand Gröger
Beatbox: Julian Knörzer

As the newest offshoot of the Eurovision event series, the title of “Eurovision Choir of the Year” will be conferred this year for the first time. And in the running to represent Germany: Jazzchor Freiburg.

Attentive viewers will have seen the trailer during this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, as the event’s producers, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), featured it prominently, but now it’s official: nine top European choirs will compete in Riga on 22nd July 2017.

The evening-long show will be broadcast from the 8000-seater Riga Arena to all participating countries. Responsible are German broadcaster ARD as well as its regional networks WDR and SWR.

Unlike the Eurovision Song Contest, the winners will be decided by a jury made up of the British composer John Rutter, Swiss conductor Nicolas Fink and Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča. The selection of Jazzchor Freiburg as Germany’s representative was made by an expert forum. Grammy winner and composer Eric Whitacre will present the live show.

The trip to the Baltic capital is only made possible through the support of a number of generous donors. The German embassy in Riga and the City of Freiburg are not the only contributors helping Jazzchor Freiburg to counter the huge costs. Prominent on the list of benefactors include the Gisinger Group, the Eugen Martin Foundation, the Ganter Brewery, Sparkasse Freiburg-Nördlicher Breisgau Bank, President a.D. Christian Wulff, Mercedes-Benz Kestenholz as well as Badenova. Organisation of the event in Riga will be undertaken by EBU, LTV, Live Riga and INTERKULTUR, the world’s leading promoter of international choir competitions and festivals.

Under the direction of its founder Bertrand Gröger, Jazzchor Freiburg has performed in countless concerts and tours at home and abroad, including in China, Japan and South Korea. The choir’s first-prize wins in national and international competitions and its series of highly-acclaimed CD productions underscore the ensemble’s exceptional quality, which is represented by the Erika Esslingen concert agency. Jazzchor Freiburg owes its long-standing success to its rhythmic precision, pitch-perfect intonation, huge dynamic range and furious energy, which impresses and delights audiences globally time and again. The singers will be supported in Riga by Julian Knörzers first-class beatboxing: virtuosic in the best sense of the word, while highly musical and nuanced, just like Jazzchor Freiburg itself.
